The agreement, which will help create a framework for prevention, preparedness and response to the pandemic, has been in the works since 2021.
A binding agreement between member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat pandemics will soon be concluded. The organization's Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus said this during a summit in Riyadh on Sunday, April 28, writes Al Arabiya .
The agreement, which will help create a framework for prevention, preparedness and response to the pandemic, has been in the works since 2021, he said.
“This will help us be better prepared and prevent the same thing from happening to COVID,” he said.
Ghebreyes emphasized that at the global level there has been an increase in intergovernmental cooperation in preventing the spread of infections: joint intelligence, a mechanism for sharing pathogens for research, assistance to countries that have the opportunity to move to the production of medical goods, as well as the creation of a pandemic fund managed by the World Bank.
“The main thing is to have a binding agreement to combat the pandemic that member states will adhere to. Therefore, if something happens, it is better to prevent it,” said the head of WHO.
