Russian security and law enforcement authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a hoax bomb threat allegedly perpetrated by a private security firm.

Investigators said that last November three members of an unidentified transport security organization planted three fake bombs under two highway bridges in the city of Tver, 160 kilometers northwest of Moscow.

“They then provided false information over the phone about an impending terrorist attack,” said a statement from the regional department of Russia’s Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes.

The two men were charged with knowingly reporting a false terrorist attack, a felony punishable by up to eight years in prison.

It is reported that the third female suspect fled Russia and was put on the international wanted list.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) said the group included "managers and employees" of a transport security firm, state news agency RIA Novosti reported on Thursday .

Neither the FSB nor the Investigative Committee identified the organization or disclosed the woman’s role.

“The woman suspected of illegal actions was not on the territory of Russia during the incriminated period,” the FSB said.
