According to the case materials, the crime was organized by a migrant who worked as a cook in Ussuriysk. He agreed with a local resident to export 13 sperm whale teeth to one of the countries of Southeast Asia.

However, their plan was uncovered by customs officers and the UFSB of Russia for Primorsky Krai. Both suspects were caught red-handed. Law enforcement officers found and seized from the migrant another 151 sperm whale teeth and two fragments of walrus tusks worth a total of about 1.5 million rubles.

The Pogranichny District Court reviewed the materials of the criminal case and sentenced the Ussuriysk resident to five years of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period of three years. The foreign citizen was sentenced to real imprisonment for six years to be served in a general regime penal colony. The sentence has not entered into legal force.
