Trump and his team were unhappy with the AP's reporting on the recently renamed Gulf of America, which the agency still calls the Gulf of Mexico. The body of water received the new name immediately after Trump took office. Google and Apple Maps quickly followed the instructions of the White House occupant. The AP emphasized that it was not disputing the order, but geographical names should be easily recognizable to all audiences around the world, and decided to continue calling the Gulf of Mexico, as it has been "for more than 400 years." The agency follows the same logic with Mount Denali in Alaska, which Trump wanted to return to its former name, McKinley.
AP Executive Editor Julie Pace called the White House move "punishment for independent journalism" and said it violated the First Amendment.
