Economist Podoprigora warns of rising global food prices due to climate

Published: in News by .

"The risks are associated with disruption of agricultural production, supply chains and price stability," the expert explained in an interview with RIA Novosti .

According to him, by 2050, global production will decrease by 10-25 percent if measures to adapt to climate change are not taken. In addition, by that time the planet's population may reach 10 billion people, which will increase demand for food and increase pressure on markets, Podoprigora added.

Countries that rely on imports will be hit hardest by rising prices.

A representative of the same department, Yulia Davydova, added that the abnormal heat primarily has a detrimental effect on grain and legume crops, and sunflowers.

In her opinion, in 20-30 years bread in some regions may cost “more than gold.”

Meanwhile, a number of experts believe that climate change is a plus for Russia. In this case, the country will have more land suitable for agricultural work, winter will become more comfortable and it will be possible to save on heating. Of course, there are also minuses. About them – in the material of "Rossiyskaya Gazeta".
