The Martin family, Ken and Barbara, and their three children, set out on a car trip to the Columbia Gorge on December 7, 1958, and never returned.
The bodies of the two youngest daughters, 13-year-old Virginia and 11-year-old Sue, were found in the Columbia River a year later. The rest of the family, including 14-year-old Barbara, were never found.
Diver Archer Mayo learned of the Martin family's disappearance in 2018. After reviewing the archives, he found out that there was a deep hole dug in the river. It was located near a parking lot, from which one could easily drive into the river without knowing the area. The man assumed that this was what had happened to the family.
In March 2025, Mayo discovered the sunken Ford, but the diver was only able to get to the car in August, when he cleared piles of debris on the way to the car.
Inside, the man found human bones. Next to them was a camera labeled with the owner's name, Ken Martin.
"A diver has recovered from a car the remains of two adults believed to be the Martin family, whose disappearance in 1958 sparked a media frenzy and sparked years of speculation about their fate," the article says.
It seems, the publication adds, that this discovery has put an end to a 67-year-old mystery.
However, the Hood River County Sheriff's Department has neither confirmed nor denied the information, saying only that the nearly 70-year-old case is still under investigation.
The remains found will be sent for examination. It is possible that the bones of a third child may be among them.
