Let us recall that lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were shot dead on January 19, 2009 in Moscow near the Kropotkinskaya metro station.

In May 2011, the Moscow City Court found Nikita Tikhonov guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. His common-law wife, Evgeniya Khasis, received 18 years in prison.

In 2022, the Supreme Court reduced her sentence to 17 years, excluding punishment for illegal arms trafficking, leaving only a term for complicity in the murder of Markelov. She was not charged with Baburova's murder.
