40 years ago, the Soviet Army's special forces received the "Canary" small-arms and grenade launcher complex (SGC), which allowed them to silently hit targets. The Kalashnikov Concern spoke about the anniversary of its development.
The SGK, which was used in 1985, was designed by specialists from the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TSNIITochmash). The need for the "Canary" arose due to the transition of the Armed Forces to new ammunition of 5.45×39 millimeters. The new SGK replaced the "Tisha" complex based on a machine gun chambered for 7.62×39 millimeters.
The "Canary" complex included a modification of the Kalashnikov AKS-74UB assault rifle with a folding stock and a PBS-4 silent and flameless firing device, as well as a 30-millimeter silent grenade launcher with a cumulative incendiary grenade. It could penetrate armor 15 millimeters thick.

The "Canary" remained in service until the early 1990s. It was replaced by the silent VSS rifle "Gvintoriz" and the special AS machine gun "Val".
Earlier in October, it became known that the Russian Armed Forces had received a batch of shortened AK-12K assault rifles ahead of schedule, which allow them to fire effectively in urban areas and trenches. The assault rifle, created at the request of the Airborne Forces, is equipped with a low-noise firing device.
