Around 1,000 new BMWs have steering defect
Published:
by .Nearly 1,000 BMW 5-Series and 7-Series vehicles are likely being recalled due to a defective steering joint that could result in steering difficulties and, possibly, a crash.
The issue affects only 1% of the 982 vehicles recalled. It is suspected that the spindle's dual universal joint may not be designed to meet standards and could be damaged during certain steering maneuvers, the report said.
If the joint breaks, it means the driver will have to exert more effort to steer the car or lose control altogether, which could lead to an accident. The recall notice says BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the defect.
The automaker first became aware of a potential problem on June 26, 2024, when a damaged steering shaft was noticed at one of the company's plants. BMW launched an investigation and issued a recall on September 18, 2024.
The recall affects 2024-2025 model year 530i xDrive and 540i xDrive vehicles manufactured between June 17, 2024 and July 17, 2024, 740i xDrive and 760i xDrives manufactured between June 17, 2024 and July 1, 2024, and i7 eDrive50, i7 xDrive60, and i7 M70 vehicles manufactured between June 18, 2024 and July 3, 2024.
Dealers were notified of the recall on September 25, and owners will be notified by first class mail from November 15. They have been instructed to replace the steering spindle dual universal joint free of charge.
