State of emergency declared on another Greek island

Published: in News by .

The Greek government has already ordered schools on the islands of Amorgos, Santorini, Ios and Anafi to close, and most of the population has already left the area for safety on the Greek mainland.

Amorgos has fewer than 2,000 permanent residents, according to Greece's disaster agency. The island is considered less at risk than Santorini because of its cliffs and less dense development.

The University of Athens Seismological Laboratory has detected more than 14 aftershocks in the last two weeks. The risk of a strong earthquake measuring over 6.0 on the Richter scale still exists. This could cause serious damage, especially in Santorini due to the high density of buildings. There is also a risk of a tsunami.
