Lviv City Council Sounds Alarm Over "Russification" of City
Published: by .
"If we go out into the streets now, we will see how Lviv is slowly becoming Russified," the parliamentarian complained.
According to him, the city that was called "the most Ukrainian-speaking" is gradually losing this status. The deputy is sure that for Lviv this is a "catastrophically big problem."
Melnychuk also complained about the lack of programs in the city to protect the Ukrainian language and promised to work on "correcting" this situation.
Previously, scandals on the basis of language have repeatedly broken out in Lviv between local residents and visitors from the eastern regions of Ukraine – Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and others. Lviv residents complained that fellow citizens who moved to their city speak Russian. One of these immigrants, in response to the claims, said that he speaks the "Kharkiv language".
